What should I ask my therapist before booking?
Okay, so you’ve started your search for a therapist but, woah! Who knew there were so many options?! Begin narrowing your search with these helpful tips:
What kind of therapy are you looking for? If you are looking for something specific for example: ADHD or OCD support look for a therapist who is experienced in that specific area.
Okay now, this is likely eliminated a fair few therapists from your list so now what? Check out their website or clinic page. What are their credentials and education? Experience? Fees? How do they bill? As you read, look not only for the obvious of someone who knows what they are doing but also how does their page make you feel. Flex your intuition bone - does this feel like a therapist you’d be able to connect to?
Yay, your list is down to the final one or two! As you prepare for your initial consultation (usually a short 15-20 minute chat to check each other out before committing to a full session) come prepared with a few questions. Ask questions about their credentials and education - really to double check what you’ve already read on their website or clinic page. Ask questions about their therapy style, availability, and session flow. Ask yourself how is it chatting with this person - do you feel relaxed, and comfortable? Some nerves are normal!
Lastly, the two session rule. A bit of an old school take but I do agree! You’ve booked in your first session after choosing a therapist. Your first session didn’t go quite as you’d hoped - now what? It felt like you were butting heads and struggling to get on the same page (keep in mind a therapist who asks hard questions and challenges you is okay). First, talk with your therapist about your reflections during the next session and give it another chance. If after two full sessions you feel it’s not a match due to work style or personality let the therapist know!
Sending you support on your search,
