What should I expect after a therapy session?

So, you made it through your therapy session and now what?

First off, YAY, pat yourself on the back. Sometimes just getting there is the hardest part!

Keep these things in mind:

  1. Not every session will come with an earth shattering break through moment.

  2. Therapy can be hard - it’s okay to have mixed emotions walking out of your session.

  3. Leaving breathing room after sessions before getting back to your regular schedule.

  4. Set up a transition routine - this routine is leading back to your daily do’s a little more gently. This ties into point #3 and I highly recommend! Maybe its a cup of tea and your favorite album. Maybe its going home for a bath and then putting on the coziest pants you own. Maybe its journaling out your session with a sweet treat beside you. Regardless of what you choose it should feel like a sign of relief and a quick, quiet break.

  5. Make a habit of taking small moments to reflect on how you are implementing the practices you have built up during therapy. It can be as simple as walking away from a conversation and thinking to yourself, “Hmm, I handled that well.” Or, an acknowledgement to self after you completed an outing or task that historically has been far more challenging.

Don’t forget - sometimes showing up is half the battle and you’re already doing that!
